In the newly published 2012 Backpacker Fall & Winter Buying Guide special issue, Outdoor Research products were selected in five categories: Best All-Around Hardshell Jacket; Ultra-Light Insulated Series; Multi-Use Softshell; Warmest Hat; and Best 3-in-1 Glove. Among them, the Outdoor Research M’s Mentor Jacket won the award for Best All-Around Hardshell Jacket, and the Outdoor Research M's Incandescent Hoody received the Ultra-Light Insulated Award.

In the hardshell jacket test, Outdoor Research’s newly designed M’s Mentor Jacket, using Gore-Tex Pro Shell fabric, scored full marks for breathability. This hardshell jacket was awarded Best All-Around Hardshell Jacket. The new Outdoor Research Incandescent down jacket received the Ultra-Light Insulated Award. Backpacker wrote: “When our Rocky Mountain-based editor, with thirty years of outdoor gear testing experience, gave it a near-perfect score, we knew a champion had been born.”
Additionally, the new Outdoor Research Salvo Jacket, using Gore Windstopper X-fast fabric, earned the top spot in the Multi-Use Softshell category for “Protection/Breathability Overall Performance.” In other category awards, the modular-designed Outdoor Research Luminary glove, suitable for cold-weather alpine climbing, was nominated for Best 3-in-1 Glove. The Outdoor Research Aria and Outdoor Research Transcendent down hats also claimed the title of Warmest Hat. One tester called it “a fur coat for your head.”
Earlier this year, the Outdoor Research Axiom Jacket won Outside Magazine’s 2012 Gear of the Year Award.
