Supported and sponsored by KAILAS among others, the 5th Guangdong Provincial Rock Climbing Championships — the largest and highest-level event in the province’s history — kicked off with great excitement on November 24 at the Olympic Sports Center. The competition featured 13 events across five categories: Junior A, Junior B, Family, Amateur, and Professional. The event attracted nearly 200 enthusiasts from all over the province as well as from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, with the number of participants even surpassing that of the National Championships and the National Youth Championships. Over a thousand team leaders, coaches, parents, and other spectators came to cheer on the athletes.

The competition was intense, and in the end, Pan Yufei from the Guangzhou Olympic Sports Climbing Team claimed the men’s difficulty title in the Professional category, while Chen Zhuoying, a young athlete from the Zhongshan Team, won the women’s difficulty title. These two athletes, both under 13 years old, became the youngest ever champions in the Professional category — naturally also making them the most talked-about stars of the championships.

In addition to the professional competitions, this edition of the Rock Climbing Championships also had a fun and relaxed side — especially the parent-child events in the Family category, which attracted many local parents to experience the endless charm of climbing with their children. Many parents said that climbing is a great way to build children’s perseverance, and they hope for more opportunities to interact with their kids through such climbing activities.
