On November 29, it was announced that the world’s premier snowboarding tour — the Flyin' High Snowboarding Beijing World Cup and live music concert — will be held at the Bird’s Nest Stadium on December 8.
On the 29th, the press conference for the event was held at the Bird’s Nest. Attendees included Li Yingchuan, Director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports; Li Jinkang, Deputy Director; Wu Jingjun, Vice President of Beijing State-Owned Assets Management Co., Ltd.; representatives from sponsoring companies; and Sun Nan, the event ambassador and a well-known mainland Chinese singer.
This year’s Flyin' High Snowboarding Beijing is jointly organized by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports and the National Stadium, and hosted by the Beijing Sports Competition Management Center. The organizers have built a 62.5-meter-long, 8-meter-wide, and 42-meter-high jump ramp inside the Bird’s Nest, paired with a 30-meter-long, 22-meter-wide landing slope — an impressive setup.
At the press conference chaired by Hai Zhenwen, Deputy Director of the Beijing Sports Competition Management Center, it was revealed that 24 top athletes from 12 countries will showcase their daring, creativity, skill, and energy through thrilling and flawless high-speed jumps and aerial maneuvers on December 8. Participants include last year’s champion, Norwegian rider Ulrik Badertscher; Finnish rider Peetu Piiroinen, winner of the World Snowboard Tour (WST) championship; and Seppe Smits, WST Big Air champion.
The 2012-2013 snow season marks the 20th anniversary of Flyin' High. Two-time Olympic champion and snowboarding icon Shaun White will attend as the event ambassador, while Sun Nan will also perform live, bringing an extreme sports spectacle to winter Beijing.
Since its debut in Europe in 1994, Flyin' High has become a premier snowboarding competition beloved across Europe and the globe. It combines competitive sports, musical performances, and victory parties, and is hailed as a leader in extreme sports and fashion.
Beijing introduced the Flyin' High event at the Olympic Sports Center in 2010, making it the city’s first world-class winter outdoor sports competition and aligning with China’s growing winter sports trend. In 2011, the event moved to the Olympic venue — the Bird’s Nest — further boosting its influence. It is reported that Beijing will host the Flyin' High Beijing World Cup for five consecutive years, establishing it as one of the city’s key sporting brands and promoting the vigorous development of winter outdoor sports.
The Flyin' High Beijing World Cup uses a points ranking system and consists of two parts: the qualification challenge and the finals. From the 24 participants, the top 12 and 4 lucky qualifiers compete in a one-on-one knockout format, with the winner taking home the Flyin' High championship ring and medal, along with 1,000 TTR points and a cash prize of $100,000. The event is sponsored by international brands such as Oakley, Red Bull, and Beijing Hyundai. This year, a new competition segment — “Red Bull Airtime” — will be introduced, using advanced electronic timing devices to record and display the airtime of each jump in real time. The rider with the longest hang time will win a $5,000 bonus.
