On the evening of December 3, the 2012 China (Guangzhou) International Documentary Film Festival, jointly organized by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television and the People's Government of Guangdong Province, and hosted by the People's Government of Guangzhou Municipality and the Guangdong Provincial Administration of Radio, Film and Television, grandly opened at Guangzhou Friendship Theatre. The Deputy Director of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, the Secretary of the Guangzhou Municipal Committee, the Vice Governor of Guangdong Province, and many other central and provincial-level leaders attended this documentary film festival award ceremony.
That evening, at the grand international documentary film festival, all attendees witnessed the birth of what can be considered the most prestigious award in the field of documentaries in China and even the world. The renowned outdoor brand KAILAS, as a strategic partner of the festival, was invited to attend the award ceremony. The flashes of media cameras, the cheers of fans, the star power, and KAILAS’s exquisite photography wall complemented each other, together creating this highly anticipated international documentary film feast in China.

Chinese and foreign documentary directors entering the venue

As an internationally influential documentary film festival, this year saw a total of 1,488 entries comprising 2,608 episodes submitted for selection and screening, originating from 65 countries and regions — an increase of over 800 entries compared to last year. The number of films more than doubled, and their quality also significantly improved. These documentaries covered a wide range of themes including humanities, history, military warfare, nature and environmental protection, science and technology exploration, social documentaries, culture and arts, among others. Additionally, there were many outstanding documentaries that depicted outdoor sports lifestyles, indicating that outdoor adventure life is gradually entering the view of mainstream documentary filmmakers both in China and abroad.

Finally, after deliberation by the final jury composed of seven renowned domestic and international documentary judges, 13 awards were announced, including the “Best Chinese Producer Award,” “Best Documentary Director Award,” “Best Documentary Award,” and “Jury Grand Prize.” A grand and magnificent award ceremony was held in the presence of numerous Chinese and foreign journalists. It is understood that to promote documentary culture to the general public, the festival has launched a public screening event since October, offering free or low-cost access to the public for a documentary film feast. This documentary film festival and its related activities will continue until the end of this month.

The China (Guangzhou) International Documentary Film Festival is currently the only national-level international professional documentary exhibition in China and has begun to rank among world-class documentary festivals. In terms of subject matter, after ten years of development, the festival’s films cover various aspects of social life, with outdoor adventure-themed documentaries receiving particular attention. Since 2009, KAILAS has been fully supporting professional documentary film festivals, including the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival in Canada.
As is well known, documentaries carry significant public value and are “a means for humanity to understand and discover the world.” It is precisely because KAILAS’s brand mission closely aligns with the goals of the documentary film industry that this sponsorship of the China (Guangzhou) International Documentary Film Festival is a perfect match, representing a seamless integration between the outdoor industry and the cultural and artistic fields.
