Beginners are advised to find a more skilled companion to guide them, and only attempt skating alone in the rink after mastering the basics.

Rest well before skating, because the lower limbs and ankle joints bear the most strain during skating. If your body is overly fatigued, it will be hard to maintain balance, making falls more likely. Also, it’s best to take a break every 15 to 30 minutes while skating. During breaks, loosen your shoelaces to allow better blood circulation in your feet, which helps relieve foot fatigue.

Don’t forget to do warm-up exercises. Warm-ups can boost the excitability of the central nervous system, raise muscle temperature, improve blood circulation, and increase the flexibility and range of motion in your joints and ligaments. Skating after a proper warm-up generally reduces the risk of falling.

Wear clothing that is both warm and flexible when skating. This allows for easier movement. If possible, wear knee pads and wrist guards for added protection. In extremely cold weather, wear gloves and earmuffs. After practice, promptly wipe off sweat and put on proper clothing to prevent catching a cold or getting frostbite.

If you lose your balance and are about to fall while skating, immediately bend your body to lower your center of gravity. When falling, try to bring your limbs in close to avoid or reduce injury.

Do not perform dangerous moves or actions that obstruct others from skating. For example, avoid unnecessary jumping around. Do not hold hands in groups of three or more while skating, as this may cause multiple people to fall and get injured. Do not carry sharp objects such as nail clippers or knives, or fragile items like glass bottles in your pockets or waistband, to prevent injuries from cuts if you fall.
