Ms. Wang joined a tour group to travel in Northeast China. After signing the travel contract, the travel agency suggested she purchase accidental injury insurance. Ms. Wang asked, “Doesn’t the travel agency already provide insurance?” The staff explained, “What you’re referring to is travel agency liability insurance, which covers the compensation liabilities that the travel agency must bear for accidents caused by negligence or mistakes during the organization of travel activities. Personal accidents due to tourists’ own reasons are not covered.” As a result, Ms. Wang spent several dozen yuan to buy a travel accidental injury insurance policy. On the second day in the Northeast, while skiing at the ski resort, Ms. Wang accidentally fell and got injured, experiencing severe pain. She immediately went to the hospital for treatment and was diagnosed with a coccyx fracture. After her recovery, the insurance company compensated her, helping to cover her financial losses. Ms. Wang sighed, “Luckily I bought insurance before the trip. Otherwise, the loss would have been even greater.”
In light of this, the Quality Supervision and Management Department of the National Tourism Administration hereby issues the following advisory to all travelers:
First, when traveling, you may encounter personal injuries, property loss, illness, or loss of documents. Travelers can reduce losses from unexpected risks through insurance.
Second, travel agency liability insurance is a type of insurance that travel agencies are required by law to purchase. This insurance only covers the compensation liabilities that travel agencies legally bear for personal injuries or property losses of tourists due to their negligence or mistakes. Injuries and losses caused by tourists’ own actions during the trip can only be borne by the tourists themselves.
Third, travelers can purchase travel accident insurance from professional insurance companies or qualified agencies. When buying, pay attention to the scope of coverage and choose an insurance plan suitable for your travel activities.
Fourth, if you experience an accident while traveling, you should promptly report it to the insurance company or relevant agency. If medical treatment is needed, keep all diagnosis certificates and related receipts issued by the hospital properly to ensure you receive appropriate compensation.
