Due to differing preferences among modern kayakers, kayaks are generally divided into two main categories:
1. Flatwater kayaks; 2. Whitewater kayaks (also known as river kayaks);
Flatwater kayaks can be further divided into: flatwater racing kayaks and sea kayaks.
Flatwater racing kayaks are typically specially designed competition boats used in enclosed, calm water bodies for speed purposes. They are characterized by a long, narrow hull, mostly made from carbon fiber and fiberglass to achieve maximum speed (used in Olympic competitions).
Sea kayaks, as the name suggests, are designed for use in open waters. They are usually around 4.5 to 5.5 meters in length, with a width of about 62 to 58 centimeters, weighing approximately 22 kilograms, and have an effective load capacity of around 150 kilograms. Shown here is a German-made Prijon sea kayak, which features an upturned bow to better cut through waves and prevent splashing onto the deck. Its cruising speed is generally around 8.5 km/h, with a top instantaneous speed reaching over 11 km/h.

In recent years, to cater to the needs of some kayaking enthusiasts who wish to paddle in different locations, some major international kayak manufacturers have started producing foldable kayaks, such as Canada’s Feathercraft and the U.S.’s Pakboats. Compared to rotational-molded and fiberglass hard-shell kayaks, foldable kayaks take up less storage space, are easier to transport and carry, and can easily fit into a car trunk. Their hull frames are made of aerospace-grade aluminum alloy, with outer skins constructed from wear-resistant, anti-corrosion chemical materials. They offer performance comparable to hard-shell kayaks but come with a higher price tag.

Whitewater kayaks, designed for paddling in rapids, are suitable for rivers with significant drops. Most are made using durable HDPE material via rotational molding. They feature short and wide hulls that offer good impact resistance and agility. Most whitewater kayaks available in China are foreign brands, with the most famous including: Liquidlogic, Wavesports, Fluid, and Jackson. Domestic brands include Dangqipai’s Shuiwudancer and Xiangyu.

Canoe, also known as a dugout canoe, is an ancient single-bladed paddle vessel. Unlike kayaks, canoes are paddled using a single-bladed paddle on either side of the boat and are often used for long-distance drifting. They are somewhat similar to China’s dragon boats. Their characteristics include large load capacity, stability, and suitability for extended camping trips and downstream drifting activities.
