Kunming Residents Are Most Willing to Spend on Travel Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen Average Travel Budgets Fail to Make Top Three
High housing prices, high cost of living, and high personal income tax—the "three mountains"—make it even harder for young people striving in cities to catch their breath. The Mafengwo "2013 Holiday Travel Forecast Report" shows that in terms of travel budgets, 41.22% of people chose the "economical" option of 3,000–5,000 yuan, 25.07% chose the "petty bourgeois" option of 5,000–7,000 yuan, 16.52% chose the "budget" option of 1,000–3,000 yuan, and 17.19% chose the "luxury" option of 7,000–10,000 yuan and above.
The Mafengwo "2013 Holiday Travel Forecast Report" shows that among first-tier cities, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen did not make the top three in terms of travel budget. Kunming residents are the most willing to spend on travel, ranking first in per capita travel budget among cities with 6,219 yuan. Nanning ranked second with a per capita travel budget of 6,071 yuan. Harbin came in third with 5,929 yuan. Shanghai ranked fourth with 5,824 yuan, Nanjing fifth with 5,600 yuan, Shenzhen sixth with 5,533 yuan, and Beijing seventh with 5,493 yuan. Cities eight to ten are Dalian with 5,469 yuan, Shenyang with 5,353 yuan, and Hangzhou with 5,273 yuan.
Other cities are as follows: Fuzhou and Suzhou with 5,250 yuan, Tianjin with 5,214 yuan, Shijiazhuang with 5,063 yuan, Lhasa with 4,900 yuan, Chengdu with 4,844 yuan, Dongguan with 4,800 yuan, Hefei with 4,769 yuan, Chongqing with 4,617 yuan, Wuhan with 4,576 yuan, Guangzhou with 4,293 yuan, Xiamen with 4,200 yuan, Qingdao, Xi'an, and Changchun with 4,000 yuan, Changsha with 3,714 yuan, Ningbo with 3,333 yuan, and Zhengzhou with 3,167 yuan.
1–3 Trips Account for Nearly 70% Beijing and Shanghai Residents Love Traveling More
Nowadays, many young people view travel as a "seasoning" to life. When work is tiring or they’re not feeling their best, a trip can leave them feeling "refreshed and energized" afterward. The Mafengwo "2013 Holiday Travel Forecast Report" shows that in the survey on the number of trips, 69.1% of people chose to travel 1–3 times, 22.41% chose 3–5 times, and 7.88% chose more than 5 times.
Whether it’s the ever-rising housing prices or the constantly increasing cost of living, Beijing and Shanghai often appear on various social ranking lists. Facing inescapable life pressures, people living in these two cities usually relax through travel. The Mafengwo "2013 Holiday Travel Forecast Report" shows that Beijing and Shanghai residents love traveling more. Among those traveling 1–3 times, Beijing ranked first with 18.8%, followed by Shanghai and Chengdu with 5.41% and 1.23% respectively. Other cities are Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Suzhou, Hohhot, Chongqing, and Dalian, followed by Zhengzhou.
In addition, among those traveling 3–5 times and more than 5 times, Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou ranked top three with 6.36%, 1.9%, and 0.38% respectively. Other cities are Chengdu, Shenzhen, Suzhou, Nanjing, Dalian, Nanchang, and Chongqing. This shows that residents of Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou are very enthusiastic about travel.
Over 80% Choose Independent Travel as Their Preferred Method Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangdong Residents Love Independent Travel the Most
As various countries and regions relax independent travel conditions for mainland tourists to boost economic growth and stimulate consumption, independent travel has become the top choice for people. The Mafengwo "2013 Holiday Travel Forecast Report" analysis shows that independent travel is the main method, with 82.53% choosing it, 15.1% choosing semi-independent travel, and only 2.37% opting for group tours.
Mafengwo data shows that people from Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou love independent travel the most, with proportions of 21.3%, 8.8%, and 6.7% respectively. Other cities include Chengdu, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Wuhan, Xi'an, Tianjin, and Shenyang.
Shanghai Residents Are Most Willing to Spend on Accommodation Dalian Residents Are the Most Frugal on Accommodation
Foreign homestays, also known as guesthouses or short-term rentals, where local residents offer short-term lodging to travelers, have become very popular. At the end of 2012, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development encouraged eligible traditional residences to engage in tourism reception and accommodation activities. Mafengwo data shows that in hotel accommodation choices, 59.92% of people chose homestays, 28.02% chose three-star hotels, 10.16% chose four-star hotels, and only 1.9% chose five-star hotels.
Shanghai residents are famously meticulous—they dress appropriately and plan every detail of what to eat, what transport to take, and their daily itinerary. The Mafengwo "2013 Holiday Travel Forecast Report" data confirms this trait. Mafengwo data shows that among those who chose four-star and five-star hotels in the "hotel accommodation requirements," Shanghai ranked first with 23%, while Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen failed to make the top three. Harbin and Tianjin ranked second and third with 21% and 18% respectively. Other cities include Beijing, Shenzhen, Kunming, Wuhan, Chengdu, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Shenyang, Xi'an, Nanjing, and Dalian.
The Mafengwo "2013 Holiday Travel Forecast Report" shows that among those who chose homestays and three-star hotels in the "hotel accommodation requirements," Dalian residents topped the list with 100%, followed by Nanjing and Xi'an with 98% and 96% respectively. Other cities include Shenyang, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Chengdu, Wuhan, Kunming, Shenzhen, Beijing, Tianjin, Harbin, and Shanghai. Due to Dalian’s high cost of living and relatively low wages, its residents are very frugal when choosing travel accommodations.
Downloading Travel Guides Is the Most Popular Pre-Trip Essential
When traveling to an unfamiliar or not well-known place, the vast majority of people will first choose to download a travel guide online. The Mafengwo "2013 Holiday Travel Forecast Report" shows that among pre-trip essentials, downloading travel guides ranked first with 96.39%, followed by getting recommendations from friends with 37.99%, and buying guidebooks with 23.17%.
