Vibrant colors create a rainbow boulevard—Kaohsiung’s Jiaxian district revives the stunning “Umbrella Street”!

Previously, Umbrella Street in Houyi Commercial District of Kaohsiung City captured attention both domestically and internationally. Although it had to be taken down eventually due to budget constraints and disaster prevention considerations, many people expressed their disappointment. But this eye-catching umbrella street scenery isn’t limited to Houyi—currently, Cat Alley in Jiaxian District also has umbrellas hanging high,with336 umbrellas in six colors creating a unique umbrella street that adds a splash of brilliant color to Cat Alley.

“Jiaxian Cat Alley – Umbrellas Full of Charm” has actually entered its third edition. Chen, the organizer of “Umbrellas Full of Charm,” explained that the original intention was to protect the 13 creative murals in Cat Alley from being damaged by rain erosion. The district chief recalled seeing umbrella streets during travels abroad and decided to introduce the concept to Jiaxian, creating a practical yet beautiful display of hanging umbrellas. This not only preserves the artwork but also allows visitors to admire Cat Alley’s scenes under the shelter of the umbrellas—a win-win solution.

The 336 umbrellas installed in Cat Alley usedsix colors: red, pink, peach pink, blue, lilac, and orange, enhancing the visual appeal of the installation. The layers of umbrellas create a vibrant “umbrella boulevard.” As visitors walk through, they can quietly experience the distinctive features of the local alleyways. However, Chen also mentioned that if this“Umbrella Street”suffers damage from typhoons, sun exposure, or rain and becomes unusable, there are plans to redecorate the alley using taro leaves—a local specialty of Jiaxian—or lanterns, giving the area a fresh look. The goal is to combine Cat Alley, the murals, and the art installations in various ways to showcase the beauty of the locale.
