Fengning has a vast territory, higher in the northwest and lower in the southeast, divided into three geographical zones: below the plateau, the transition zone, and the Bashang Plateau. The area below the plateau features undulating mountains, waterfalls such as Longtan Falls, deep valleys, and beautiful interplay of water and mountain scenery. The transition zone is a vast sea of forests filled with birdsong and floral scents, serving as a natural kingdom for foraging and hunting. The Bashang Plateau offers expansive skies, lush grass, and colorful blooms. In the height of summer, the cool climate makes it a perfect resort destination.
The region is rich in natural resources. Among the many flowers and plants for viewing, the golden needle flower in May, wild poppy in June, branch-dry plum in July, and golden lotus flower in August are especially beloved. Around the time of the Dragon Boat Festival each year, larks nest and hatch their eggs among the grass and flowers, making it the best season for bird catching. In October, hundreds and thousands of migratory geese make short stops here. Grassland animals such as hares, moles, foxes, and leopards are often spotted in the grassy slopes. The Bashang Grassland is a great place for summer retreats and hunting.
Shandian Lake, the largest lake on the upper reaches of the Luan River, gets its name from the Shandian River that flows into it before entering the lake. Amidst the vast, open grasslands, the sight of this clear, beautiful expanse of water is called Shandian Lake by locals. Though the origin of the name is unclear, the emergence of such a bright and pristine lake in the boundless grassland truly brings a lightning-like surprise. Perhaps there was once a beautiful love story about a heavenly lightning fairy and a hardworking, brave grassland youth.
