KAILAS’s product line covers clothing, backpacks, sleeping bags, tents, climbing gear, footwear, and more. As a professional outdoor brand, a group of outstanding explorers and mountaineers guide KAILAS’s design based on their real-world outdoor experience, ensuring that products offer maximum protection in harsh and unpredictable extreme environments. KAILAS designers also incorporate more fashion elements into their work, aiming to allow more everyday outdoor enthusiasts to experience the new outdoor feeling brought by cutting-edge technology.

At this year’s Nanjing Asia Outdoor Exhibition, GreenLighting.com interviewed KAILAS’s Cao Jun

Q: What are your development goals in China for 2014?
A: We will continue to focus on climbing activities. As a professional outdoor brand, KAILAS takes it as its mission to “actively promote the development of amateur mountaineering and exploration.” We are carrying out public welfare projects including the “KAILAS China Unclimbed Peaks Project,” “KAILAS Coaches Development Program,” “KAILAS Mountaineering and Exploration School,” and “KAILAS Climbing Team,” which have nurtured important reserve talents for the development of mountaineering and exploration. They will become a significant driving force for the advancement of outdoor sports in China.

Q: What do you think is KAILAS’s core competitiveness in the outdoor brand competition?
A: I believe our competitiveness mainly relies on technology and materials to ensure product performance. Our team members personally engage with and understand climbing, which informs our product design. One of my ice screws, for example, uses relatively advanced technology and won an Outdoor Industry Award. We have also applied for a patent in China.

Q: KAILAS has always maintained attention to and support for China’s climbing activities. Can you talk about the “Stars of Hope” climbing program for youth?
A: First of all, KAILAS places great importance on the sport of climbing. Youth are the future of outdoor sports, and early training benefits their physical and mental development. This year and next, we will also launch the “One Hundred Thousand Climbers Plan,” encouraging more climbing enthusiasts and the youths we support to participate in climbing activities and competitions.

Q: What is the purpose and significance of KAILAS’s “Outdoor Coaches Development Program”?
A: This program actually started in Shenzhen in 2006, and later gradually expanded to Guangzhou, Beijing, Jinan, and Urumqi. The locations were chosen based on factors such as local climbing activity levels and organizational capacity. We aim to train professional coaches who can then teach and organize activities locally, promoting outdoor sports, especially climbing. At the same time, we will also hold events and provide equipment to create a positive cycle.
