Traveling in Japan is becoming increasingly popular, and transportation options are becoming more diverse. If you want to cover long distances without spending a fortune on flights or the shinkansen, the “overnight bus” is the most budget-friendly choice. How can you rest comfortably and relax while riding an overnight bus? Here are 7 essential tips you should know before your trip.

1. Choose a bus with 3-row seating
Currently, most overnight buses in Japan come in either 3-row seating (1-2 arrangement) or 4-row seating (2-2 arrangement). For greater comfort, it's better to opt for the 3-row seats. The 3-row configuration often includes single seats, so you don’t have to worry about others encroaching on your personal space. Although the price is slightly higher than the 4-row option, the difference isn’t significant—so for longer trips, 3-row seating is the better choice.

2. Choose a seat toward the back
If you want to rest well, it’s recommended to pick a seat toward the back of the bus. The front rows tend to have more foot traffic, which can disrupt your sleep. To minimize disturbances, choose a rear seat. However, be aware that sitting in the back may increase the likelihood of motion sickness, so remember to bring motion sickness medication.

3. Choose an aisle seat
While window seats allow you to lean against the window to sleep, the air conditioning tends to be stronger there. Aisle seats give your legs more room to stretch, making for a more comfortable sleep.

4. Choose an overnight bus with private curtains
Japan values personal privacy, so some overnight buses are equipped with curtains for each seat. Once drawn, they create your own private little space where you can sleep peacefully. If privacy is important to you, consider choosing a bus with this feature.

5. Eat until you're about 80% full before boarding
Eating too much before the ride can easily lead to motion sickness, so try to eat until you’re just about 80% full. Additionally, avoid greasy foods like fried items as they can also increase the chances of feeling queasy.

6. Use your carry-on luggage as a footrest
Although most bus seats come with footrests, not all do. If your seat doesn’t have one, you can place your carry-on luggage under your feet and rest your legs on it to help relax your legs.

7. Don’t forget to bring sleep aids
Items like eye masks and travel pillows can help you sleep better on the overnight bus—be sure to bring them along.
