Macao, July 29, 2013 — Macao Hikers Limited announced that the “2013 Sands China Macao Hikers” will take place on Saturday, November 2, 2013. Starting August 1, 2013, the event will begin accepting public registrations on a first-come, first-served basis, with a maximum of 350 teams. The “Sands China Macao Hikers” has chosen the theme “Explore the Green Side of Macao with You,” aiming to showcase to all participants Macao’s unique, fresh, and lesser-known natural environment. Both visitors and local residents can discover Macao’s beautiful and captivating natural scenery through the event, thereby raising their awareness of environmental protection.
Mr. Carlos Kao, Director of Macao Hikers Limited, presided over the press conference and introduced the latest information about the event to attending guests and media friends. Also present as officiating guests were Mr. Tai Cho Ieong, Acting Director of the Sports Development Board of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government; Ms. Lau Fong Chi, Acting Head of the Public Relations Office of the Macao Government Tourism Office; and Mr. Gunther Hatt, Executive Vice President of Operations of Venetian Macau Limited.
Last year, the “Sands China Macao Hikers” attracted a total of 325 teams comprising 1,300 participants from various cities and countries. Despite the enthusiastic global response, the organizers have decided to slightly increase the number of participants this year to ensure the quality of the event. The event raised a total of HK$250,000 for local charitable organizations last year. This year’s beneficiary will be the Macau Federation of Rehabilitation Associations. This non-profit organization has been operating in Macao since 2003, providing a variety of social welfare services to the local community. The group will also deploy volunteers on the day of the event to help ensure its smooth running. As in previous years, all entry fees will be fully donated to the beneficiary to support its daily operations within the Macao community.
In addition to the support of numerous sponsors and volunteers, this major event has also received strong backing and assistance from the Macao Sports Development Board, the Macao Government Tourism Office, and title sponsor Sands China Limited. The organizer, Macao Hikers Limited, also announced that the Macao Government Tourism Office will assist in promoting the “2013 Sands China Macao Hikers” in key cities and countries across the Asia-Pacific region, including Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Indonesia. Sands China will also provide participants with top-quality services at The Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel.
The “Sands China Macao Hikers” embodies the spirit of community engagement and sportsmanship, successfully establishing itself as an extraordinary event. Unlike conventional sporting competitions, the “Sands China Macao Hikers” provides a shared platform for all participants, their families, and friends. The event also highlights the benefits of maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. Additionally, the organizers introduced a Best Ladies Team Award last year to encourage greater female participation, and this award will continue this year.
Macao Hikers and Sands China will work together to enhance the environmental initiatives of this year’s event, incorporating practical measures from the “Sands ECO360° Global Sustainability Program” designed by Las Vegas Sands Corp., as well as arranging a green meeting services team to assist in promoting sustainable operations. These include setting up water dispensers instead of distributing bottled water, and reusing materials such as backdrops and decorative arches in next year’s event.
