2013 China Qinghai "Passionately Trekking Through Qaidam":
The "Passionately Trekking Through Qaidam" hiking adventure event is organized by the Qinghai Provincial Sports Bureau and the People’s Government of Haixi Prefecture, and hosted by the Haixi Prefecture Culture, Sports, Radio, Television and Tourism Bureau and the Qinghai Mountaineering Sports Management Center. It is an exploration event that is national in scope, professional in nature, and large in scale. Centered around the Devil’s City in the Qaidam Basin, the event will pass through four unique natural scenic areas in Qaidam: the Halahatu Forest, the Alien Ruins, the Dongling Hill Devil’s City, and the Ten-Thousand-Zhang Salt Bridge, covering a total distance of approximately 90 kilometers. Nearly 50 hiking enthusiasts from across the country have joined the event, with 30 staff members providing services such as equipment transport, medical assistance, accommodation, catering, and security. Additionally, 11 national news media outlets will provide full coverage of the event. This activity plays a positive role in further promoting Qinghai and the rich tourism culture of the Qaidam Basin, as well as advancing the vigorous development of sports and leisure activities on the Qinghai Plateau.
About the Qaidam Basin:
The Qaidam Basin is vast, rugged, and primitive, often referred to as the "Treasure Basin." It is located in the northern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, surrounded by the Kunlun Mountains and its branches, the Altun Mountains and the Qilian Mountains. It stretches approximately 850 kilometers from east to west and about 300 kilometers from north to south, covering an area of 257,768 square kilometers. It borders the Hexi Corridor to the north, connects to Tibet to the south, extends to Xinjiang to the west, and lies at the central position of western China, occupying 35% of Qinghai Province’s total area. With an average elevation of 2,600–3,100 meters, it is the highest inland basin in China and the deepest subsided area on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, characterized as a typical enclosed high-mountain basin.
