China News Service, December 30 — According to foreign media reports, the UK is planning to invest in constructing a network of dedicated cycling highways to make it easier for people to choose bicycles as a mode of transport for commuting from the suburbs to the city center. Architects have put forward relevant proposals, with an estimated construction time of 20 years.

The first phase of this project, named "SkyCycle," includes 10 routes, with a total length of approximately 220 kilometers. The cycling highway network will extend outward from central London, with the entire system built as an elevated structure running above existing railway lines, about three stories high. Once completed, the routes could accommodate up to 12,000 bicycles per hour.

It is reported that the first phase will run from east London to Liverpool Street Station, with an estimated cost of around £220 million. The 10 routes will serve a population of approximately 6 million, with about half living within a 10-minute walk of a highway entrance. A full route would take roughly 30 minutes to complete.

As it has become increasingly difficult to separate cars and bicycles in city centers, the "SkyCycle" plan is currently seen as a major benefit for cyclists. Planners say this highway network is safe and efficient, while also better promoting cycling as a means of transport, offering commuters and leisure riders a convenient travel option.
