On February 21, 2014, the Outdoor Products Branch of China National Textile and Apparel Council (COCA) released the “2013 China Outdoor Market Survey Report” at the ISPO Sports Industry Forum. The report showed that in 2013, China’s outdoor products market developed rapidly, with an annual retail total of 18.05 billion RMB and an annual growth rate of 24.3%; the total brand shipment value was 9.68 billion RMB, with an annual growth rate of 30.9%. The report concluded that in 2013, Chinese outdoor brands faced more of a “reshuffle” situation, with potential and core-competitive brands beginning to show their advantages, while “generic brands” found themselves in a tougher position. Brands have shifted their focus from the previous core of “brand awareness” to a comprehensive approach involving marketing, e-commerce, training, and brand services.

In fact, as early as 2012, Extreme Outdoors had already spotted this market opportunity, making a strategic move ahead of others by proposing a new three-in-one transformation model: the Extreme Outdoors website platform + the Extreme Outdoors online mall + the nationwide chain of Extreme Outdoors physical stores. This evolved from the original mission at the site’s launch in 2008 — providing an outdoor network platform for learning, sharing, exchanging, and spreading among outdoor enthusiasts — to also offering a full range of services including outdoor gear shopping, international backpacker hostels, and outdoor clubs for fellow travelers.

Extreme Outdoors Outposts Launch Nationwide Chain Initiative

Ultimately, Extreme Outdoors Outposts uphold the website’s founding mission of “promoting the comprehensive development of China’s outdoor industry,” and advocate the entrepreneurial philosophy of “having fun while building a business, turning small ventures into big ones,” creating a considerate outdoor lifestyle where “with a backpack, you roam the world, and the outpost is your home” for fellow extreme adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

In the future, the development of Extreme Outdoors Outposts will focus on expanding the national network, promoting the comprehensive development of China’s outdoor industry, and building a Chinese-owned chain of Extreme Outdoors outposts.
