More dramatic than a typhoon twist—The world’s strangest houses look like they’ve been squeezed by giant hands

"This house wasn’t warped by a typhoon!" The Crooked House in Sopot, Poland, is an extraordinarily irregular and quirky building. From its doorway and windows to the ceiling, everything appears twisted and swayed as if swept by fierce winds or twisted by giants. It also resembles a reflection in a giant funhouse mirror, making it the most iconic structure in the area and earning it the title of "the strangest house in the world."

Built in 2004, the Crooked House is called Krzywy Domek in Polish, which means “crooked house,” and is often referred to as the “twisted house.” It is an annex building of the Sopot Shopping Center. Every corner of the structure is twisted and deformed in ways that defy logic—curved extensions, elongated eaves, and distorted windows, all enhanced by lighting and bold colors, make the Crooked House look like something straight out of a dream.

In fact, the designers of the Crooked House were inspired by the children's book illustrations of Jan Marcin Szancer and Per Dahlberg, which led to the creation of this extraordinary building. Around the world—including Germany’s Gherkin Tower, the Shanghai Tower, and Hong Kong’s The Opus—similar twisted architectural styles can be seen, though none are as exaggerated. In Prague, Czech Republic, the “Dancing House” shares the Crooked House’s soft, fluid sense of distortion and is equally renowned as a uniquely peculiar building. These structures have also drawn large crowds of tourists, becoming offbeat yet popular attractions.
