A Xiamen University associate professor sprints 400 meters to catch a thief.

The thief “false-starts,” sprinting dozens of meters ahead, while a Xiamen University associate professor relentlessly pursues. After 400 meters, the two face off and throw punches — two blows later, the thief dares not act defiantly. This dramatic showdown took place on the campus of Xiamen University. Around 4 p.m., Associate Professor Huang Lisheng from Xiamen University’s Physical Education Department was on his way to class. Having just entered the campus and not gone far, he was near the swimming pool when suddenly a female student rushed up to him, anxiously pointing at a figure sprinting ahead and crying out: “There’s a thief up ahead — can you help me catch him?”

The girl had no idea that the person she’d encountered was Huang Lisheng, a well-known figure in the running community — head coach of Xiamen’s Public Welfare Marathon Training Camp, champion of the Citizens’ Cup at the first Xiamen International Marathon, and the first torchbearer of the Xiamen International Marathon. Of course, the thief had no idea either.

By this time, the thief had already sprinted dozens of meters ahead and was tall and burly. Huang Lisheng, carrying a large backpack, took off after him at full speed, shouting as he chased: “Stop right there!”

The two raced one after the other, starting from the swimming pool, then heading to the tennis court, circling its perimeter, and finally reaching the Biology Building. Despite having a head start, the young thief was no match for 45-year-old Huang Lisheng. After 400 meters, near the Biology Building, Huang reached out with one hand and grabbed the thief by the throat.

The thief stopped, turned around, panting heavily but still aggressive. “I’m not a thief, I didn’t steal anything,” he said. Standing 1.75 meters tall — the same height as Huang Lisheng — and weighing around 170 jin (about 85 kilograms), he was even stockier than Huang, hands on hips, yelling loudly.

As the thief yelled and lunged forward, Huang blocked his path. “You just stay right there,” he said, then quickly threw two punches at the thief’s head. The thief froze, stunned — his arrogance suppressed by the force of the blows — and dared not run anymore.

Soon, several physical education teachers and bystanders gathered around, helping to surround and subdue the thief. Police officers from the Daxue Road Police Station arrived and took the thief away.

Investigations revealed that the thief, surnamed Zhang, born in 1985 and from Henan Province, had stolen approximately 600 yuan in cash. The case is currently under further investigation.
