Takeout with the quality of dine-in: A post-90s pursues dreams with “pressed toast”

Many foods taste different when ordered for takeout versus dining in, but with modern people’s busy lives and limited time to sit down and enjoy a meal, takeout has become the norm. However, “Toast Surprise” hopes tobridge the gap between takeout and dine-in, ensuring that even when taken away, customers can still enjoy the hearty flavors of a sit-down meal.

% The shop doesn’t just offer generous ingredients, but also provides richly flavored options.

“Toast Surprise” is tucked away in a corner of Beitou Market, featuring a quaint, fresh style with decorations like herbs and wood. It specializes in Italian-style toast, commonly known as pressed toast. The bread, piled high with toppings and baked in a panini press, boasts a crispy texture paired with bursting fillings, delivering both satisfying crunch and fullness. The shop’s signature “Bursting Peanut Butter Thick-Cut Beef” uses a rich peanut butter base, topped with thick slices of beef steak and a layer of cheese. One big bite reveals layers of flavorful sauce, balanced by vegetables that prevent it from being overly heavy, creating a comforting and happiness-inducing experience. The shop also offers refreshing fruit flavors, including “Banana Hazelnut Chocolate, ” made with an entire banana, or “”, or “Extra-Thick Peanut Butter Apple, ” giving customers a mix of savory and sweet options that add to Toast Surprise’s variety.”, with a choice of savory and sweet flavors further enhancing the diversity of “Toast Appears”.

However, everything about this shop—the decor, ingredients, and preparation—is handled single-handedly by its young owner, Mr. Kang, who is only in his early twenties. This is truly astonishing. Mr. Kang shared that after starting university, his family expected him to cover his own tuition, but the financial pressure was too much for a part-time job to handle. So, he chose to take a break from school and join the military. Fortunately, during his service, he was assigned to the kitchen, where he learned cooking skills. After being discharged, he wanted to put his culinary talents to use. While traveling through central and southern Taiwan, he came across “pressed toast” and saw its business potential, which inspired him to start researching and crafting his own dream “toast.” To save costs, Mr. Kang did everything himself—from wiring lights to building tables—without any outside help. Once, when buying materials at a hardware store, the wooden boards were so heavy that passersby even helped him carry them, which moved him deeply and strengthened his resolve to open his own shop.

But opening a shop isn’t easy. Managing supplies, sourcing fresh ingredients, maintaining quality—all while tasting each flavor hundreds of times before launching—posed major challenges for the novice Mr. Kang. Yet, he treated each experience as a learning opportunity, hoping to channel his hard work into every piece of “toast” and deliver his commitment to quality to customers.

Although the shop is now running smoothly, Mr. Kang says he still loves studying and plans to return to school once he’s earned enough money to continue his education. Perhaps his life path differs from that of his peers, as he had to face the pressures of the real world earlier, but he welcomes the challenge and even jokes that he doesn’t want to be “Toast Uncle” forever. “Toast Surprise” is like a milestone on his journey toward his dreams—each piece of toast is a building block, and with every warm, freshly made toast, he shares the warmth of his aspirations with customers while continuing to strive for his own future.
