When it comes to the Dragon Boat Festival, many people’s first thought is eating zongzi. However, as a traditional Chinese festival with a history of thousands of years, the Dragon Boat Festival encompasses a series of long-standing folk customs such as eating zongzi, racing dragon boats, hanging sachets, and singing folk songs. So just eating zongzi doesn’t really count as celebrating the festival. Only by personally experiencing the various folk activities across different regions can you say you’ve truly celebrated the Dragon Boat Festival. This year, the Dragon Boat Festival coincides with Children's Day, so why not take your kids on an unforgettable folklore-themed trip? It will be an educational and fun holiday for them. Here, we focus on introducing the Dragon Boat Festival folklore experience in Suzhou. We’re sure the unique local customs of the Wu region and the beautiful scenery of Suzhou will make your trip worthwhile.

Suzhou’s Dragon Boat Festival Honors Wu Zixu

The Dragon Boat Festival in Suzhou has one most distinctive feature. Generally speaking, Dragon Boat Festival activities across the country are held to commemorate Qu Yuan. But in the Suzhou area, the festival is in honor of Wu Zixu, and the related commemorative activities actually have a history more than 200 years older than those for Qu Yuan.

Highlights of the Folk Customs

“Honoring Wu Zixu, Welcoming the Water Nymph”

The story of Wu Zixu, a statesman from the Spring and Autumn Period, is widely known in Suzhou. He was the hero who helped King Fuchai of Wu build the ancient city of Suzhou. Later, a rift developed between him and the king, and he was ordered to commit suicide by Fuchai, with his body thrown into the river on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. After Wu Zixu’s death, the Wu Kingdom gradually declined. As a result, a popular saying arose among the people of the Wu and Yue regions: “When Zixu died, the water nymph was born.” Since then, “Honoring Wu Zixu, Welcoming the Water Nymph” has become an important part of the Dragon Boat Festival in the Wu and Yue area.

Dragon Boat Racing

The dragon boats in Suzhou are quite unique. Their four corner pillars are adorned with colorful flags of various hues, and the central cabin features drummers and horn blowers, creating a loud and impressive spectacle when the boats are rowed. On the day of the Dragon Boat Festival, the banks of the Xu River are packed with crowds, as families and people of all ages come out to watch the dragon boat races. The Suzhou people refer to the launching of the dragon boats as “sending the dragons out,” which involves preparatory ceremonies such as welcoming the gods and staging performances, known as “launching the boats.” A 5-meter-high colorful stage is set up by the riverbank for dragon dance and dragon worship rituals. The race only officially begins after paying homage to the River God Wu Zixu. Upon returning to shore, a send-off ritual called “pulling the dragon head” is also performed. It is reported that this year’s Dragon Boat Festival races will be held at Jinji Lake on June 2, where you can experience the thrilling atmosphere of the races firsthand.

    Traditional Zongzi-Making

Households in Suzhou often make their own zongzi, and the methods used today still closely follow ancient traditions—a rarity even across the nation. Glutinous rice and various fillings are wrapped in green bamboo or reed leaves into triangular pyramid shapes (called “lotus-leaf zongzi”) or cylindrical shapes, then boiled over high heat and simmered slowly for several hours. Zongzi in Suzhou are generally divided into three types: savory, sweet, and plain. Common households make plain zongzi, red bean zongzi, and date zongzi, while more elaborate versions include pork-fat glutinous rice zongzi. These use premium red beans, which are cooked, skinned, and desanded before mixing with sugar and fat to form the filling. A slice of fatty pork is also added inside—this is a classic Suzhou flavor.

In addition to dragon boat races and zongzi-making, families in Suzhou also hang bundles of calamus and mugwort on their doors, and many drink realgar wine to ward off evil spirits. These customs carry the heartfelt wish to pray for health and safety for loved ones.

If you still haven’t had enough, you can visit other scenic spots. The Humble Administrator’s Garden, Tiger Hill, Hanshan Temple, Lingering Garden… Paradise-like Suzhou is sure to dazzle you with its beauty.
