Foreign media reported that a mountaineering event organizer said on the 26th that a 13-year-old underprivileged Indian schoolgirl recently overcame numerous hardships and successfully climbed Mount Everest from the Tibetan side of China, becoming the youngest female to reach the summit of the mountain.
Agence France-Presse reported on May 26 that the girl, named Malavath Poorna, is the daughter of a tribal farm laborer in India. Mohammad Ansari, the technical coordinator of her climbing team, said Poorna successfully scaled the world’s highest peak from the Tibetan side of China on the 25th.
Poorna’s father comes from an indigenous tribe and earns just 35,000 rupees (approximately 3,700 yuan) a year. The reason Poorna was able to embark on this climb is due to funding from a government-run social welfare organization in southern India.
The climbers have also won praise from India’s new Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He posted on Twitter: “Delighted to hear the news. Congratulations to our young achievers — they have made us all proud.”
