The main peak of Queer Mountain features a towering body, complex and varied terrain, well-developed glaciers, and dense ice crevasses, making it technically challenging to climb. Among these, the glacier along theC1toC2section is the most spectacular and beautiful, ranking among the best in China’s mountains. Queer Mountain is quite far from Chengdu. The mountaineering team traveled by vehicle from Chengdu along the Sichuan-Tibet Highway through Kangding, then headed north via Daofu and Garzê, passed through Manigange, and finally arrived at Xianuoduo Lake. The entire journey was868kilometers. After reaching Xianuoduo Lake, they proceeded to the northern foothills of the main peak of Queer Mountain, where the climbing base camp is situated at an altitude of about4000meters. Most of this section involved crossing mountains and the altitude continuously increased, which posed a challenge for members prone to motion sickness or altitude sickness.
Given that the team had climbed Queer Mountain in2013, the leadership team decided to adopt more self-reliant climbing methods this year. Because the elevation gain on Queer Mountain exceeds2000meters (from around4000meters to over6000meters), and because team members have to carry their own gear, not to mention the fact that there are two particularly long and steep ice walls requiring technical ice climbing, the physical demands on the team were high.
After arriving at the base camp, some members experienced mild altitude sickness, which improved after acclimatization. On the summit day, from approximately6000meters to6168meters, climbers had to navigate an ice wall (with a slope of60-70degrees and a height of about50meters) and traverse a70degree slope. Along the way, they passed several protection points over the course of about1hours.11Team members, who were well-trained, had good physical reserves, and were well-acclimatized to high altitudes, ultimately overcame their limits with perseverance and confidence to successfully summit Queer Mountain. Behind this success was the support of the whole team; the efforts of each member ensured the smooth operation of logistics, allowing everyone to trust their teammates completely. This victory belonged to the entire mountaineering team.
