Last updated 2026-11-08 — Traditional climbing relies on your own judgment to interpret the route, using precise movements to ascend, making the most authentic contact with cliffs in their primal state!--The term "traditional climbing" may sound daunting, involving a variety of gear and intricate procedures, and it places many demands beyond climbing itself—on mindset, perseverance, and belief...

Traditional climbing has been practiced in China for over a decade, yet it is still in its early stages of development. Big wall climbing is the dream of many climbers, but they often don’t know where to start. In recent years, as climbing has gained popularity in China, most climbers already possess the ability to scale big walls—the missing piece is knowledge about traditional climbing equipment and how to operate safety systems. Since BLACK DIAMOND and THE NORTH FACE jointly held traditional climbing exchange events in Lijiang’s Laojun Mountain in 2012 and 2013, domestic climbers have developed a more comprehensive and rational understanding of traditional climbing. More onlookers have become learners, starting to study and try traditional climbing, resulting in a sizable community of enthusiasts. This has effectively and safely promoted the growth of traditional climbing in China and attracted an increasing number of overseas traditional climbers to return to China to exchange ideas and promote the sport. Yi Siting, a Taiwanese girl, and her new book "Traditional Climbing" are representatives of these grassroots efforts. It is believed that after the 2014 Laojun Mountain Traditional Climbing Exchange Conference, there will be more qualitative changes in the development of traditional climbing in China.

About the Book "Traditional Climbing":
This book is a guide to getting started with traditional climbing. Since its inception, climbing has evolved into a systematic discipline. Standing on the shoulders of giants, newcomers can learn in safer and more effective ways, thereby enjoying the activity. What sets this book apart from other English-language guides is that for each topic, it first explains the theoretical foundation before demonstrating one or more mainstream methods. Many climbing books focus solely on techniques without addressing the theory. There are countless ways to learn, but unlike teaching, writing can’t adapt to each learner’s optimal method—this book encourages independent thinking.
