Since all reindeer skin clothes are hand-sewn, the garments can also reveal whether the woman who made them has “golden hands.” The Nenets people typically own only three or four reindeer skin coats in their lifetime. As people frequently go out hunting or herding, each coat must be of very high quality and carefully maintained. As a result, many women spend their entire lives sewing and caring for these garments.
A local girl named Yangna told reporters that reindeer skin clothes are alive. She said modern clothes are mass-produced in factories. You don’t know who made them, and you feel no emotional connection to them. But reindeer skin clothes are sewn by a mother stitch by stitch under the lamplight, filled with her love. Although her mother passed away many years ago, she still wears the reindeer skin coat her mother made, feeling as if she is constantly being held in her embrace. Reindeer skin clothes embody the simple life philosophy of the Nenets people: gratitude, simplicity, contentment, and joy.
