Ensuring safer takeoffs and landings
This technological innovation enables the airport to achieve safer, more reliable, and more stable flight operations under various weather conditions
Shanghai, November 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Honeywell Aerospace(NYSE:HON)and Hughes Aerospace today announced a partnership to jointly develop satellite navigation-based technology solutions for Yangon and Mandalay International Airports in Myanmar, optimizing aircraft takeoffs and landings at these airports.
“Through our collaboration with Yangon and Mandalay airports, we are revolutionizing traditional ground-based navigation equipment and entering a new era of satellite navigation,” said Brian Davis, Vice President of Aviation Business for Honeywell Aerospace, Asia Pacific. “Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) flight procedures are a new solution based on the global satellite navigation system. The implementation of these procedures will optimize flight paths to reduce flight time while enabling more efficient takeoffs and landings.”
This collaboration marks the first step by the Civil Aviation Authority of Myanmar (DCA) in improving approach procedures at Myanmar airports. The authority also plans to install Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) flight procedures at other international and domestic airports in the country. Yangon and Mandalay airports are two of Myanmar’s major international gateways, handling an annual passenger throughput of three million.
“The new Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) instrument flight procedures will transform Myanmar’s existing airspace. They not only support safer, all-weather approaches but also significantly enhance the reliability of airport operations, creating more development opportunities. Our successful collaboration with the Myanmar government and airlines will play a key role in improving flight efficiency and airport operational capacity,” said Chris Baur, President and CEO of Hughes Aerospace.
In July this year, Honeywell and Hughes signed a formal agreement with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) to develop Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) flight procedures for Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport in Tacloban City. The newly developed navigation procedures will aid disaster relief efforts in the Philippines, supporting further assistance, relief, recovery, and reconstruction in Leyte Island, Tacloban City, and surrounding areas affected by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.
Advantages of Performance-Based Navigation
Performance-Based Navigation is a general term that defines the navigation performance requirements for air traffic routes, instrument procedures, or defined segments of airspace. This solution addresses limitations in aviation transport capacity by making more efficient use of airspace. It is based on two fundamental navigation concepts: Area Navigation (RNAV) and Required Navigation Performance (RNP).
Key advantages of Performance-Based Navigation approach procedures include easier approaches to airports in complex terrain, safe operations on parallel runways, clustered and adjacent airports, reduced delays and diversions due to weather, and shorter flight times through optimized and more reliable, repeatable flight paths.
