Nanhaizi Park is one of the four confirmed suburban parks in the city. The Beijing Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government attach great importance to the construction of Nanhaizi Park. The city government“Beijing Urban South Development Action Plan”has included the park’s development as a key ecological public welfare project.
The planned area of Nanhaizi Park extends north to the South Fifth Ring Road, south to Huangyi Road, west to104 the national highway, and east to Liangshui River. The park covers an area of8.01 square kilometers.
Historically, the Nanhaizi area was a hunting ground during the Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, and served as an imperial garden during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing periods. As early as the Ming Dynasty, the region was
hailed as“one of the Ten Scenic Spots of Yanjing”known as“Autumn Winds at the Southern Hunting Park”, renowned for its wetland landscapes. During the Ming and Qing dynasties alone, twelve emperors visited the area more than 130 times for hunting
and official duties. Emperors Shunzhi and Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty respectively received the Fifth Dalai Lama and the Sixth Panchen Lama of Tibet here.
The design concept of Nanhaizi Park is based on the restoration of wetland ecology, with cultural heritage as its soul, aiming to build the park into a multifunctional, sustainable comprehensive park featuring wetlands and culture as its two main
characteristics.
