Last updated 2026-11-08 — Do you want to drive to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau? Want to uncover the mysterious veil of Tibet? On December 30th, at the Beijing National Convention Center, a self-driving route titled "Qinghai-Tibet Plateau | Exploring the World’s Third Pole," designed based on the content of the large-scale Tibetan-themed documentary "The Third Pole," was voted by netizens as one of the 2014 China Self-Driving Tour Annual Routes...

Mr. Ning Shuyong, Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations at Volvo Car China Sales Company, stated: Volvo’s collaboration with CCTV’s "The Third Pole" was a carefully selected match based on shared values and lifestyles. The Nordic region is one of the most suitable paradises for human habitation, representing values that we often talk about: first, achieving success in one’s career; second, caring for family; and third, cherishing nature and frequently immersing oneself in it, becoming one with nature. This is reflected in many of our car owners, who prioritize safety and tend to be low-key—just like our cars, quiet yet full of substance. Therefore, "The Third Pole" and Tibet undoubtedly provide an excellent stage.

The self-driving route selected for the 2014 annual 36 Routes originates from this very concept. What makes this self-driving route special is that it was planned based on the shooting itinerary of "The Third Pole," with every segment having been thoroughly traveled by the filming crew. Tibet’s roads have undergone tremendous changes over the past decade, yet even with the opening of the road to Motuo, the road conditions remain quite challenging. The roads leading from Motuo County to the mountain villages are flanked by snow-capped mountains over 4,000 meters high, subtropical rainforests at the foot of the mountains, and the Yarlung Tsangpo River in the valley. Geological disasters are a common occurrence here—any rainfall can trigger landslides and mudflows, blocking roads for days. The roads are extremely dangerous, where even minor mistakes can lead to major accidents. Therefore, having a reliable and safe vehicle becomes crucial. The "The Third Pole" filming crew was supported by Volvo Car’s newly launched XC CLASSIC vehicles, allowing them to venture deep into the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and discover numerous lesser-known hidden paradises, showcasing to the public a Tibet with a cultural and natural charm different from previous impressions. This effort has been widely praised by netizens.

On the afternoon of the announcement ceremony for the 2014 China Self-Driving Tour Route Selection, a special screening of the large-scale documentary "The Third Pole" was held. The audience was amazed and highly responsive, showing great interest and anticipation for the places featured in the film. It is reported that the "The Third Pole" documentary will premiere on CCTV in early 2015.
