Since last year, the Sunrise over the Orient Kempinski Hotel has amazed global guests with its unique facilities, architectural design, and market positioning as a convention and resort leisure destination.
“Since we opened the facilities on Yanqi Island, we’ve hosted many large conferences for multinational corporations. In 2015, most of our MICE business will come from the automotive, pharmaceutical, and technology industries,” said Bruno Porquet, General Manager of the Sunrise over the Orient Kempinski Hotel & Yanqi Island.
Porquet also noted, “We offer our clients a wide range of product options that are transforming Beijing’s MICE landscape, surprising organizers and attendees by hosting events on land, by the lake, on the water, and at the foot of mountains. At the same time, we’ve partnered with unique service providers such as helicopter services, electronic yacht services, and hot air balloon experiences, all aimed at delivering distinctive and luxurious experiences for our guests.”
Our weekend resort guests mainly come from domestic visitors in nearby cities, Beijing residents, and expatriates living in Beijing.
Yanqi Lake
The hotel is situated in the core scenic area of Yanqi Lake, at the foot of the Yanshan Mountains, surrounded by various historical and cultural attractions including the Mutianyu Great Wall, Hongluo Temple, Qinglong Gorge, and Baquan Mountain. In 2014, the Mutianyu Great Wall, just a 30-minute drive from the Sunrise over the Orient Kempinski Hotel, attracted over two million visitors. Activities in the area include water sports, golfing, horseback riding, and skiing.
Architectural Concept, Structural Design, and Sustainability
The Sunrise over the Orient Kempinski Hotel was designed by Shanghai Huadu Architectural Planning & Design Co., Ltd. The architectural concept is inspired by the image of the rising sun, emphasizing the natural harmony between the building and its mountain-water surroundings. It also incorporates elements of a summit hotel, with 20 vertical meridians showcasing the building’s upright elegance, symbolizing harmony, unity, and cooperation.
The upper main structure of the building adopts a hybrid structural system of (steel pipe concrete columns + steel beams) + reinforced concrete core tube. The internally reinforced concrete core tube provides strong horizontal and vertical support for the entire building. Vertical arches interweave with horizontal ellipses to form a grid, creating a lantern-shaped structural skeleton capable of withstanding earthquakes up to magnitude 8, while also achieving the "sunrise" design effect.
Maximizing the building perimeter allows for more natural light. Compared to tower-style layouts, slab-style floor plans of the same area provide 25% more natural lighting. The slab layout thus makes more efficient use of natural light. The hotel’s curtain wall uses LOW-E glass that allows most outdoor radiant energy to pass through during the day but effectively prevents indoor heat from escaping at night or during cloudy and rainy weather, controlling the one-way flow of heat outward and greatly improving the thermal insulation performance of the window glass.
