Ways to Enjoy Cherry Blossoms in Japan on a Free-Independent Journey

    Cherry blossoms, Japan’s national flower, hold deep emotional significance for the Japanese people. When the cherry blossoms bloom each year, locals gather under the trees for parties and flower viewing, a tradition known as “hanami.” The blossoms are beautiful on their own, but when combined with popular sightseeing spots, there are even more diverse ways to enjoy them. Visiting Japan during this season is a great opportunity to experience authentic Japanese hanami.

 

    After admiring the blooming cherry blossoms to your heart’s content, head to a nearby naturally beautiful hot spring to soothe your body. The Okuhida Onsen Villages in the northernmost part of Gifu Prefecture feature five hot springs. At one of them, Hirayu, you can enjoy both flower viewing and hot spring bathing. Due to its high elevation, the cherry blossoms here typically bloom about a month later than those at lower altitudes, from late April to May. During the annual blooming period from April 23 to May 5, the “Hirayu Onsen Sakura Festival” is held, where cherry blossom trees are decorated with lights, creating a magical and dreamlike scene.
