Recently, the "2014 Mainland China Mountaineering and Outdoor Sports Accident Report," compiled by the Mountaineering and Outdoor Sports Accident Research Group of the Chinese Mountaineering Association, was officially released. This accident report, initiated and written by the Chinese Mountaineering Association, compiled 55 cases of deaths and disappearances related to mountaineering and outdoor sports on the mainland, and provided a brief analysis of the processes and causes of the accidents. The data and textual information in the report were collected by national accident information officers for mountaineering and outdoor sports.
The "2014 Mainland China Mountaineering and Outdoor Sports Accident Analysis Report" was also published at the same time, conducting a comprehensive review and in-depth analysis from multiple perspectives, including the frequency of mountaineering and outdoor sports accidents, regional characteristics, types of activities, causes of casualties and injuries, the relationship between the number of accidents and mountaineering processes, timing, and organizational forms, as well as analyses of successful rescue cases. It provides detailed reference material for the development of rescue efforts in mountaineering and outdoor sports in China.
According to incomplete statistics, there were 160 mountaineering and outdoor sports accidents in 2014, involving a total of 689 people. Among them, 105 accidents had successful rescues, with a total of 619 people successfully rescued by police, firefighters, mountain rescue teams, local villagers, and others. Additionally, among the successfully rescued cases, 39 involved injuries, with 42 people injured. There were 55 accidents resulting in deaths or disappearances, leading to 63 deaths and 7 missing persons (including 2 foreigners).
In 2014, under the leadership and support of the General Administration of Sport of China, the construction of the country's mountain rescue system progressed steadily. The Chinese Mountaineering Association held 7 national-level basic mountain rescue technology training sessions throughout the year, 2 national mountain rescue technology exchange competitions, 13 public lecture sessions under the National Outdoor Safety Education Program, and 103 training sessions for safety instructors and beginner-level outdoor guides, with participation reaching tens of thousands of people, laying the foundation for the development of the mountaineering and outdoor sports industry. At the same time, the mountain rescue cause also received strong responses from numerous civilian mountain rescue organizations. Over the past year, these civilian organizations successfully completed hundreds of mountain rescue missions, saving hundreds of lives and ensuring the steady development of China’s mountaineering and outdoor sports industry.
