Heartbroken, I immediately argued with the seller, but they insisted — this was indeed authentic Yunnan specialty produce, except it wasn’t made in Yunnan at all. It was all made from 100% Yunnan-sourced raw materials...
Speechless, I realized there was no way to refute them, so I just had to swallow the bitter pill. Because during the trip, my impression of those specialties had been so positive, I really wanted to taste them, but flying back just to buy them wasn’t an option — not for someone as meticulous as a Virgo (Virgo friends, please don’t come at me!!). And friends who love online shopping also told me that when it comes to authentic Yunnan specialties, the bigger and more well-known the website, the harder it is to find genuine ones. That’s because big e-commerce sellers often prioritize sales volume and price competition over product quality. So they also recommended a few more authentic, truly Yunnan specialty-selling websites.
After careful comparison and selection, I finally settled on a new Yunnan-based specialty website — “Yun Techan” (Cloud Specialties). Given my previous bad experience, I was cautious this time and bought less, trying out just one bag of what was labeled as a Yunnan specialty food item: “Huā G Rose Flower Cake.” When I received the product, I carefully checked the origin — it was indeed Kunming, Yunnan. I immediately tried one, and the taste was genuinely good. I was told that the edible roses used in the flower cake must be picked before nine o’clock each day. To ensure the roses retain their moisture and fragrance, they must be preserved at the right temperature and the finest roses selected and processed as quickly as possible. Finally, top-grade wheat must be ground into flour in a dust-free workshop without any additives to bake the cake. Every step has to be strictly controlled to create such high-quality flower cakes (this is what the customer service told me — I’m not that knowledgeable myself, haha!!). The faint rose flavor lingered on the palate, the crust was flaky and crisp — it’s clear that real craftsmanship went into making such delicious treats. Instant thumbs-up. Kunming truly lives up to being China’s top flower capital. Haha, so I went back and bought a whole bunch: snack flower cakes, health maca, Sanqi stewing meat, Simao Pu'er tea, and more. Then, wait — what the? It’s not just Yunnan specialties. There were specialties from all over the country. Oh no, did I get duped again? I quickly contacted customer service to ask what was going on. Selling stuff from other places under the name “Yun Techan”? Isn’t that deceiving? But the answer left me utterly embarrassed. Turns out, the “Yun” in Yun Techan doesn’t refer to Yunnan’s cloud; it’s the internet term “cloud computing” cloud, meaning broad, gathered, or comprehensive. Hehe. With that worry gone, I kept shopping. When I came across unfamiliar specialties, I bombarded the customer service with questions, and those girls were super polite. Haha, I really got to play the role of a king (or queen) for once. After selecting everything and checking out, I was surprised to see the prices were actually very reasonable too.
I gave some to my friends, and they all shut up — who dares to complain about genuine goods? Hehe.
For someone like me, a foodie, a website that offers such regionally distinctive products and ships directly from their places of origin is definitely worth supporting. I bookmarked it right away. Their website is: www.yuntc.com.cn, and their WeChat ID is yuntechan. After writing all this, the merchants should probably be grateful to me, maybe even send me some freebies, hehe. Lastly, here’s a photo to go with it ~~~~
