New breakthrough in overseas payment services: Korean 7-Eleven and leading coffee chain enable WeChat Pay

Recently, Tencent’s cross-border WeChat Pay team announced partnerships with popular Korean coffee chain Coffine Gurunaru, as well as 7-Eleven and buy the way convenience stores, to launch in-store WeChat Pay services, offering domestic tourists a more convenient and secure payment experience. Visitors can now make purchases at these stores without cash by simply scanning a QR code via WeChat Wallet, making travel and shopping in Korea much easier and more hassle-free.

It is reported that Korean coffee chain Coffine Gurunaru and over 7,200 7-Eleven and buy the way convenience stores have fully enabled WeChat Pay. Customers can complete transactions by scanning a QR code using their WeChat Wallet linked to a bank card. For domestic tourists, this eliminates the need to carry large amounts of cash or visit banks to exchange for Korean won, removing various inconveniences. Additionally, using WeChat Pay allows customers to enjoy relevant in-store promotions.

Hong, head of international business at Tenpay, stated that the demand for outbound travel and cross-border spending among Chinese consumers is continuously rising, and how to make such spending more convenient, secure, and user-friendly is increasingly a concern. With WeChat’s vast user base, Tencent has established a solid foundation for its mobile and cross-border payment services. Through the WeChat Wallet interface, consumers—whether traveling domestically or abroad—can quickly complete transactions via WeChat Pay, revolutionizing the traditional overseas spending model where travelers had to carry large amounts of cash or rely on card payments.

Currently, Tencent’s cross-border WeChat Pay team has partnered with numerous overseas institutions and businesses, including AirAsia and U.S.-based iHerb. In addition, Shinsegae Duty Free, which already supports online WeChat Pay, will soon enable offline cross-border WeChat Pay, further enhancing the convenience and quality of the spending experience for visitors to Korea. The cross-border WeChat Pay service adopts an open strategy; for related services, please visit global.tenpay.com or contact paymentservice@tencent.com. In the future, the cross-border WeChat Pay team will collaborate with more online and offline overseas businesses, leveraging internet technology to improve retailers’ marketing methods and services, better meeting evolving consumer needs and shopping habits, and together delivering a more comfortable travel and shopping experience.
