RIMOWA and Lufthansa Unveil a Groundbreaking Invention in Las Vegas Immediately Win “Best Luggage Innovation” Award
Cologne, Germany, September 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- RIMOWA and Lufthansa joined forces to unveil the RIMOWA Electronic Luggage Tag for the first time at FTE Global in Las Vegas, USA, from September 9 to 11.
This fully integrated digital mobile luggage solution pioneers a new level of convenience, speed, and security when traveling with baggage. The complete package includes a RIMOWA suitcase, an airline app, and a RIMOWA electronic luggage tag embedded with an E Ink Mobius (TM) display. With an estimated 3.5 billion air travelers worldwide this year — most of whom own a smartphone — connecting luggage to the digital world is a natural next step.
How It Works
Currently, luggage is still manually checked and only then tagged with a paper luggage label. In contrast, air travelers using the RIMOWA electronic luggage tag, produced by Netronix (®), can easily check in their baggage from home or on the go via the airline’s app. Passengers not only receive their digital boarding pass for the booked flight but also digital baggage information issued by the airline. Lufthansa has recently become the first airline to integrate this feature into its app as a unique offering. By simply tapping on their luggage details via smartphone, travelers can send the data to their RIMOWA electronic luggage tag-equipped suitcase via Bluetooth. The data is instantly displayed on the built-in module using E Ink (®) technology. Once completed, the RIMOWA suitcase can be handed over for check-in at the airport within seconds.
Benefits
The information displayed on the electronic data module is identical in size and appearance to current paper luggage tags, including the green stripe required by EU customs (mandatory for all luggage departing from European airports). This makes the transition from manual to digital processes seamless, while all essential baggage data remains protected against high humidity, extreme heat, freezing temperatures, impacts, and shocks — and won’t tear accidentally, making it superior to paper tags.
Launch
RIMOWA will exclusively collaborate with Lufthansa to introduce the electronic luggage tag in RIMOWA stores, with plans to begin sales in early 2016.
