Windproofing:Slows down the air flow inside the tent and blocks strong external winds. Related performance requirements include the tear resistance of the fabric, the strength of the tent poles, and the secure assembly of stakes and other tent components. Waterproofing:Prevents the interior from getting wet from rain and blocks moisture from seeping in from the ground. Related performance requirements mainly involve the rainproof performance of the outer tent and groundsheet, as well as the structural design of the tent. Ventilation:Ensures the supply of air inside the tent and the expulsion of moisture. Typically requires a mesh structure for the inner layer of a double-walled tent, along with a reasonably designed ventilation layout. Warmth Retention:Helps retain heat and is generally applicable to the performance requirements of three-season and four-season tents. It requires the outer tent to have certain windproof and low-temperature resistance properties.
Currently, the main standards for tent products both domestically and internationally include GB/T 27735-2011 Camping Tent, ISO 5912:2011 Camping tents, and ISO 10966:2011 Sports and recreational equipment—Fabrics for awnings — Specification. Among these, GB/T 27735-2011 is equivalent to ISO 5912:2003. Some companies adopt self-declared record-filing methods for tent products to set strict performance requirements.
As one of the primary materials for tents, textile fabrics often use coated waterproof fabrics. The strength of the fabric (breaking strength and tear strength), waterproof performance, and low-temperature resistance play a crucial role in determining the overall quality of a tent. In practical use, different performance requirements are applied based on varying environments:
Camping Tents:Generally used for outdoor camping, and can be divided into alpine tents and hiking tents. They often use 190T/210T polyester or nylon fabrics. Professional mountaineering tents usually require a waterproof rating of 30kPa, while general camping tents only need 15kPa to be functional.
Leisure Tents:Also referred to as beach tents or park tents, these are generally not used for overnight stays. The usage environment is relatively stable and favorable, so their technical specifications are lower than those of camping tents. These are also often single-layer tents, with the outer fabric usually providing protection against light rain, i.e., water repellency or at least 10kPa of waterproofing, sufficient for single-environment use.
In addition, tent fabrics should also offer good moisture permeability to reduce condensation and poor moisture expulsion caused by differences in internal and external temperature and humidity.
