Schedule: Namtso Lake
Namtso is the largest lake in Tibet, the highest-altitude saltwater lake in the world, and a sacred site in the hearts of pilgrims. Legend has it that Namtso is the daughter of Indra and the wife of Nyenchen Tanglha, regarded as a must-visit holy place by devotees. Since ancient times, pilgrims have flocked here. The five islands in the lake are said to be the incarnations of the Five Dhyani Buddhas, and all who visit the sacred lake for worship pay devout homage. It is believed that during the Tibetan Year of the Sheep, all buddhas, bodhisattvas, and dharma protectors convene at Namtso to hold grand ceremonies. Circumambulating the lake and chanting scriptures once during this time is said to be more meritorious than doing so one hundred thousand times at other times. Therefore, around April 15 (Buddha’s Blessing Day), believers flock to Namtso to circumambulate the lake, creating an unprecedented spectacle.
