A few years ago, there was a popular saying in outdoor circles: earning money selling cabbage but worrying like selling white flour. Although things have improved in recent years, it’s mainly because the price of cabbage has gone up—the worries haven’t lessened at all. One accident can easily ruin the lives of both the victims and the organizers. To prevent accidents, many clubs began skirting around travel regulations, and the essence of outdoor sports was diluted.

Avoidance doesn’t solve any problems. We need to learn how not to starve, freeze, or get washed away in the wild, how to find our bearings, and how to maximize our chances of survival until rescue.

Zhu Weiqiang, nicknamed Xiaoqiang, had been studying business in London, UK, before 2007 and was a top student.

In 2007, Zhu Weiqiang met the renowned wilderness survival expert Chris Caine. From then on, he began his journey in wilderness survival.

In 2013, the “Bear Grylls Survival Academy” only recruited 10 people globally, with over 50,000 applicants. But after multiple rounds of selection, Zhu Weiqiang became one of the ten lucky individuals. Due to the grueling training, three people dropped out in succession, making Zhu Weiqiang the first Asian to graduate.

In 2007, Zhu Weiqiang met Chris Caine (a famous British wilderness survival expert) and enrolled in his outdoor survival school.

In 2013, he participated in the Bear Grylls Survival Academy and was the first Asian to complete the training.

In 2014, he filmed the large-scale wilderness survival documentary “Surviving the Extreme” in China’s “Bermuda Triangle.”

In 2015, he took part in the filming of Zhejiang TV’s reality show “Journey to the West: An Amazing Adventure.”

Experience:

1. My goal is very clear: I hope that through my efforts, more “hikers” can master more wilderness survival skills to reduce accidental injuries and fatalities.

2

When it comes to wilderness survival, if conditions allow, I never eat raw food—there are still germs in raw food. So I’ve been researching and recommending that more people learn fire-starting skills.

3

Before participating in wilderness survival, one should acquire some basic outdoor skills in advance, because survival in the wild relies not just on physical strength but more on using your wits. For example, starting a fire in the wild, building shelter, using ropes, identifying plants, reading the stars, etc.

4

Being able to survive in the wild depends more on the accumulation of skills and knowledge—you need to know a bit about astronomy and geography. When going on a wilderness expedition, make sure to prepare your gear adequately, such as backpacks, knives, rations, water, survival tools, etc.
