Issue 17 of 2016, Total Issue 64Since 2007, the Chinese Mountaineering Association has compiled the China Mountain Accident Report every year, aiming to summarize and review the year’s accidents from a big data perspective. The numbers go far beyond what figures can express—they represent the loss of once vibrant, joyful, and bright lives.
Therefore, the more important significance of compiling the China Mountain Accident Report lies in analyzing the causes and identifying the lessons learned.
In 2012, after graduation, Teacher Yuan Fudong took charge of compiling the China Mountain Accident Report at the Mountaineering Association. Reflecting on these three years of editorial work, Yuan said the most frightening thing was that the same reasons and risk factors led to repeated accidents.
In 2015, there were a total of 189 mountaineering and outdoor sports accidents (hereinafter referred to as “accidents”), involving 845 people. There were 54 injury accidents, affecting 63 people; and 38 fatal accidents, resulting in 44 deaths.
Out of the 189 accidents, 188 were successfully resolved, with all 844 individuals (including those who died) being rescued through police, fire departments, mountain rescue teams, local villagers, etc., achieving a near 100% rescue success rate.
Getting lost was the most frequent direct cause of accidents.
Slips and falls from height were the most frequent direct causes of fatal accidents.
May remains the month with the highest number of accidents throughout the year, which is related not only to the season but also significantly to the “May Day” holiday.
