As one of the most outstanding newcomers in the rescue team and one of the captain's most capable team members, I have assisted the captain in numerous rescue missions, saving several hikers trapped in remote areas. But under the experienced leadership of our captain, every mission was successfully completed without major incidents.
But this time, I faced an exceptionally tough mission because the person in trouble was none other than our captain.
We learned that before setting out alone, the captain had mentioned being at Sichuan’s Banji Peak. Given the captain’s experience, he should have already returned to our group by then — yet there was no word from him. Without delay, I quickly packed my gear and prepared to go find the captain.
I patted my forehead, then replied, “Captain, I’ve reached the foot of Banji Peak. Please stay where you are!” I memorized the coordinates in my mind, then stood up and continued toward the signal location.
Fortunately, the snow stopped not long after, and the climb went fairly smoothly. After some time, I arrived near the coordinates indicated by the Beidou signal code. Suddenly, looking back, I saw the captain had pitched a tent right next to a large rock, standing there and smiling at me. As I approached, the captain then smiled and said, “So now do you know what’s most important in a rescue mission?”
“A stable signal and accurate location,” I replied with a smile.
It turned out that the experienced captain wasn’t injured or trapped — he just wanted to teach me here that good rescuers, besides having determination, also need to learn to choose the right communication equipment. The captain and I gave each other a shoulder pat, shared a knowing smile, and looked out into the distance.
Yes, it was a beautiful place, and in that moment, my heart felt as pure as the snowy mountain.
