Last updated 2026-11-08 — Many people are very familiar with scuba diving, but very few in China know about cave diving. I wonder how many people in China actually practice this sport, and where the main locations are? What kind of experience gap is there between cave divers in China and those abroad? I estimate that there are definitely only a few hundred certified cave divers in China right now...

2Some people might be diving every week, so the experience gap is huge. This is very common in China. Many people in China learn cave diving for other reasons—they think cave diving is an awesome activity, so they get certified to prove they’re cool, but they never actually dive. I think the gap is really, really huge.

14One year, I went diving with a partner, and he died. That incident had the biggest impact on me, greatly affecting my mindset and approach to diving ever since.

Let me introduce to all the netizens who love diving and cave divingWUDthis organization.

WUDActually, what we started with was a small group under a small club. It began as a small exploration team, and then later,WUDwe took on the role of establishing training standards and systems. At first, it was just a few of us diving together, and we would also jointly create emergency response plans and solutions. But gradually, we felt these methods could be improved and shared with more people, so everyone would know how to dive safely and scientifically. Also, wudour work involves exploration—opening up many caves purely to create conditions for cave diving. This is exploration and development, not tourism development. We don’t help tourism companies with development. Many tourist attractions have approached us, asking if we could try connecting this cave with the next sinkhole, maybe blasting it open so boats could go in, and so on. People have asked us, but we don’t do that kind of development. We’re purely focused on enabling people to access cave diving and doing things like exploration and mapping. Then,WUDanother of our goals is environmental protection—we hope to protect water resources, whether freshwater or seawater. What we’re doing2includes a coral planting project in Shenzhen. There’s a coral initiative in Shenzhen, and we often participate in their activities. We have quite a lot in common with them—for example, planting corals in coral zones. You can’t step on them; you need good techniques, need to deploy measuring tapes, collect data, and so on. These are all very good techniques, and these are some of the things we do together.

As for freshwater resources, we produce videos for the government to show villagers how beautiful their homes are, and to encourage them not to dump wastewater into the water sources. We can even offer them opportunities for profit, like charging for accommodation and meals, which provides them with an incentive. What they need to do is to better preserve the water resources they already have. But unfortunately, many water sources have already been damaged, and it’s not something a single village can decide to fix. These are our main goals.
