A taste of Tainan that’s been around for 60 years — pork rice with generous sides and a unique white pepper aroma

On my quest to find delicious pork rice, I came across Jiangchuan Pork Rice and discovered it’s actually a decades-old shop that’s been open for over 60 years. It’s now managed by the second and third generations, which is why Jiangchuan also has an official Facebook page — they’re definitely keeping up with the times.

Jiangchuan is located at the prime spot where Guohua Street meets Minzu Road Intersection. This area is always bustling on weekends, and parking nearby is tough. But as a local, the advantage is being able to enjoy the food leisurely on weekdays. We usually come for dinner on a weeknight because they offer a good variety of sides, have long opening hours, serve tasty food, and it’s all very affordable.

Of course, their pork rice is the highlight. It has a rich, savory flavor from the fat but isn’t overly salty or greasy. Paired with the white pepper on the table, it becomes absolutely irresistible — it’s right up my alley.

By the way, their lion’s head meatballs are also incredibly delicious and almost on par with their pork rice. Next time you go for the pork rice, you might want to add one of those to your meal.

Among the pork rice shops I frequent the most,Ah He Pork Rice,、Futaifanzhuo,、Paodian Rice Cake,and today’s Jiangchuan are four of my personal favorites. Among them, the one you should prioritize trying is Wuming (Paodian) Rice Cake, because it’s the only one among the four run by a single person — no second generation to take over. The auntie has been working there since she was young, and the long-term physical strain has limited how much longer she can keep going. Many beloved old shops in Tainan may retire unexpectedly one day, so if you love it, act now; if you want to eat it, don’t wait too long~
