Why are subway stations often filled with ugly advertisements? That mystery may remain unsolved. But the recently much-discussed German subway stations might just change your preconceptions—they’re truly beautiful and full of design flair.

According to Lonely Planet,the Wehrhahn Line of Düsseldorf’s subway has been unveiled to visitors in a completely new light. Just beginning operations earlier this year, each station along the line is the result of an extraordinary collaboration between artists, designers, and architects. The unique features and meticulously planned hidden details showcase exceptional craftsmanship..

Beyond aesthetics, these stations avoid the narrow platforms typical of older urban subways. With comfort in mind, the stations offer ample space and make use of natural light.

The subway stations were designed by Netzwerkarchitekten and artist Heike Klussmann. The main goal was to ensure that each station has its own distinct character, while maintaining visual continuity between stations. Since opening in February, passenger numbers have proven the aesthetic success of the stations.
