With a large number of icefalls, hard ice quality, and convenient access, Shuangqiaogou has become one of China’s three premier ice climbing destinations. Compared to previous years’ Tibetan song and dance celebrations and whole lamb barbecues around bonfires, this year featured a new highlight: a night climb by the coaches. Night climbing isn’t anything new, but adding dazzling light effects to the ice walls makes everything magical. To celebrate the New Year, a night climbing speed competition was held at Wuse Mountain Villa, with colorful lights igniting the path as athletes climbed. The moment they reached the summit, the light show also peaked, symbolizing the start of a new year and a fresh climbing journey.
Ice Festival Revelry
New Year’s Eve has never been this “lit”! Compared to previous years’ Tibetan song and dance celebrations and whole lamb roast bonfire parties, this year features a new addition: a coach-led nighttime ice climbing event. Nighttime ice climbing isn’t anything unusual, but when colorful light effects are added to the ice formations, everything becomes magical. To mark the New Year, a nighttime speed climbing competition will be held at Wuse Mountain Villa, where vibrant lights ignite the climbing path as athletes ascend. The moment they reach the summit, the light show reaches its climax, symbolizing the start of a new year and a fresh journey in climbing.

This year’s Ice Climbing Festivaltakes “Igniting Ice” as its theme, highlighting the adventure, thrill, technique, strength, endurance, perseverance, and courage of ice climbing.Catering to various skill levels, this year has introduced multiple new experience categories for ice climbing enthusiasts, including a [Night Climbing & Photography Workshop], a [Kids’ Ice Play Camp], a [Ignite Ice Workshop] focusing on improving footwork, dry tooling, steep ice walls, and leading techniques, a [Beginner Experience Class] for learning how to climb ice correctly for the first time, a [Masters’ Sharing Session], and the most “igniting” outdoor sports film festival landing at the Ice Climbing Festival—the [Kendal Mountain Festival]. These offerings ensure that both beginners and seasoned climbers can find activities suited to their level,striving to help everyone who participates discover the joy of unlocking their full potential and challenging their limits.
