Because adventure rafting and general scenic-area rafting involve very different considerations, we need to discuss precautions in two aspects: First, let’s talk about what to keep in mind during general scenic-area rafting. The most common types of rafting in China include bamboo rafting, rubber rafting, as well as some more special forms such as sheepskin rafting on the Yellow River in Shaanxi and Gansu, and dragon boat rafting recently introduced on Zhejiang's Tianmu Stream. Different rafting tools naturally come with different precautions. But one thing is the same: rafting obviously involves water. So dress simply and in quick-drying clothes, but avoid wearing anything too thin or light-colored—if you fall in, you might be in for an embarrassing moment. Shoes should preferably be sandals, as sneakers take too long to dry once soaked, and your feet may end up swollen from the water. Another thing to prepare for is carrying as few valuable but water-sensitive items as possible—such as high-end cameras.

If you must bring them, it’s best to prepare a plastic bag with good sealing—it’ll definitely come in handy. However, many scenic rafting spots offer storage facilities. Other important rafting tips include wearing a life jacket—this is probably something you already know well. Although many complain about the strong smell of sweat in those jackets, you’ll put it on without hesitation.

The water in many rafting areas can be quite cold, so don’t let its charm tempt you into entering the water carelessly. As for adventure rafting precautions, there are quite a few. First, it’s recommended that you check out the survival manual from the British Special Air Service. You not only need to be a skilled paddler, able to navigate through swirling rapids with ease, but you also need to learn how to survive in the wild, how to choose a campsite, how to find food, and so on.
