Earthquake and heavy rain alert issued; Typhoon Maria (No. 8) may form

At 4:10 AM on the 4th, another earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale occurred, with the epicenter located in Guanshan Township, Taitung County. Meanwhile, a tropical depression with a pressure of 1002 hPa was situated in the sea area southeast of Guam at 11.5°N, 146.5°E, moving slowly northwestward, showing signs of developing into Typhoon Maria (No. 8).

The Central Weather Bureau also issued heavy rain and rainstorm warnings for central and southern Taiwan. From July 4 to 5, the southwest monsoon gradually weakened. On the 4th, localized brief showers or thunderstorms occurred in areas south of Miaoli as well as in Penghu and Kinmen, while other regions and Matsu were mostly cloudy with localized brief afternoon thundershowers.
