Typhoon Maria intensifies as heavy rain continues in southern Taiwan

This year’s eighth typhoon, Maria, formed on the evening of the 4th and is currently located in the Mariana Islands north of Guam, moving slowly toward the Philippine Sea to the north. The Central Weather Bureau stated that the light typhoon Maria has thick convection development near its center, with good symmetry. Coupled with high ocean heat content in the area, it is expected to soon enter a rapid development phase, with intensity set to further increase.

Currently, the center of Typhoon Maria is over the Mariana Islands, moving northwest at a speed of 14 kilometers per hour.It does not have a direct impact on Taiwan, but there are still uncertainties regarding its northward or southward path as it approaches. Whether the Pacific High will successfully extend westward over the weekend is crucial, and the weather bureau is closely monitoring subsequent developments and the typhoon's path.

In addition, affected by the southwest monsoon, central and southern Taiwan continue to see localized brief showers or thunderstorms. The weather bureau has also issued a heavy rain special warning for Pingtung County, while Kaohsiung and Tainan areas have been issued with a moderate rain special warning. Other regions are mostly cloudy to sunny, with localized brief thunderstorms possible in the afternoon.
