Nantou County’s popular tourist destination, Sun Moon Lake, has experienced a drop in water levels due to recent drought, causing the nine stacked frog sculptures along the Shuǐwātóu Trail to emerge and greet visitors, unexpectedly becoming a hot new attraction. However, due to severe silt buildup around the reservoir, the ninth frog remains stuck in the mud, while the other eight frogs, weathered by sun and wind, appear dusty and dull. In response, Taiwan Power Company has sent personnel to remove surrounding silt and even used water from Sun Moon Lake to wash the frog sculptures, giving them a fresh look for visitors.

The Shuǐwātóu Trail is situated between Dazhuhu and Itashao, stretching about 500 meters. Along the path, visitors can stroll through a tranquil bamboo forest, enjoying the serene atmosphere. In summer, the area also features blooming Litsea cubeba flowers, allowing travelers to enjoy a vibrant walk right up to the lakeshore. The now-famous nine frog sculptures were originally installed not only to reinforce the identity of the “Shuǐwātóu” locale but also to highlight the operation of Sun Moon Lake’s pumped-storage hydroelectric power system. Visitors may notice different numbers of frogs above the water at various times of the day or on different visits. This prolonged drought has now revealed all nine frogs, drawing more attention to their presence.
