I. When Is It Unsuitable to Swim

1. After a meal. Do not swim right after eating. Entering the water immediately after a meal subjects your stomach to pressure and cold stimulation, which can easily cause cramps or abdominal pain. It is generally advisable to wait about 40 minutes after a meal before swimming.

2. After drinking alcohol. Do not swim immediately after drinking. Alcohol has a numbing effect on the central nervous system, impairing bodily functions. Swimming under such conditions increases the risk of accidents.

II. Always Do Warm-Up Exercises Before Swimming

Warm-up exercises before entering the water are extremely important. They enhance the functioning of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, accelerating blood circulation and metabolism. Warm-ups also improve the performance of the musculoskeletal system, increasing muscle elasticity and strength while expanding joint mobility. These benefits significantly help prevent swimming-related injuries and avoid discomfort when entering the water.

The content and intensity of the warm-up should be chosen based on the swimming stroke, but the general principle is to fully activate all muscles and joints involved—without overexerting yourself.

It’s also important to rinse your body with cold water before entering the pool to help your body adapt to the cold water.

III. Handling Cramps in the Water

Cramps often occur while swimming, mostly due to muscle fatigue, excessive tension, cold water, or uncoordinated movements. The most common areas prone to cramping are the calves and thighs, but fingers and toes can also frequently cramp.

If you experience a cramp, stay calm and don’t panic. Get out of the water immediately, dry off, and gently massage the cramped area. Make sure to keep warm as well.
