Unlike many extreme challenges that test courage and endurance, pushing the limits of the human body tests the boundaries of life itself—such as fasting, which isn’t about bravery or stamina but literally risking your life. Below, Nine Brothers reveals the 6 human limits to expand your knowledge.

1. Sound limit: 175 decibels

The lowest sound volume humans can hear is 1 decibel. When the volume exceeds 100 decibels, the ears start to feel sore; noise over 115 decibels can cause cortical brain function decline; and noise exceeding 175 decibels can be fatal, though individual tolerance may vary, with some succumbing at levels below 175 decibels.

2. Human survival limit: 3 to 7 days without water or food

In normal conditions and temperatures, humans can survive only 3 days without water. With water but no food, the survival limit is around 7 days, depending on willpower and physical condition.

3. Human blood loss limit: 2.8 liters

The maximum one-time blood loss a human can endure is about 1.9–2.8 liters, roughly half of total blood volume. In cases of chronic blood loss, the minimum survivable blood volume is 1 liter, meaning a loss of up to 78% of total blood.

4. Human high-temperature limit: 46.5 degrees Celsius

The normal human body temperature is 37 degrees Celsius. During a fever, body temperature rarely exceeds 42 degrees Celsius, and the human body’s absolute upper temperature limit is 46.5 degrees Celsius.

5. Human low-temperature limit: 14.2 degrees Celsius

When body temperature drops to 36 degrees Celsius, reaction time and judgment are impaired; at 35 degrees Celsius, movement becomes difficult; at 30 degrees Celsius, loss of consciousness occurs; and at 20 degrees Celsius, cardiac arrest may happen. The absolute lowest human body temperature limit is 14.2 degrees Celsius—any lower causes cellular and tissue necrosis.

6. Environmental temperature limit: 116 degrees Celsius

Humans can endure 71 degrees Celsius for 1 hour, 82 degrees for 49 minutes, 93 degrees for 33 minutes, and 104 degrees for 26 minutes. The highest environmental temperature the human body can theoretically withstand is 116 degrees Celsius.
