When you first arrive in Australia, there are bound to be many things you’re unfamiliar with. But knowing in advance can help you avoid a lot of awkward situations. Yahoo recently compiled a list of 14 embarrassing things you can do in Australia. Check them out with a light heart: 1. Try to out-drink your mates at the pub Unless you’re from Russia or another country famous for its drinking culture, don’t casually try to out-drink Australians, especially those who seem friendly and chat up the bartender at the pub. Otherwise, you’ll definitely get taken down. 2. Order a “cheeseburger with just ketchup” Ordering a cheeseburger with only ketchup at McDonald’s is one of the most frustrating things you can do when ordering food. In Australia, a cheeseburger comes with just two slices of bread and no condiments. Standing in a long queue just to get bread with ketchup? That’s a waste of time. 3. Yield to the right on the sidewalk Imagine you’re walking along and a group of strangers is coming toward you. Which way should you turn? If you instinctively turn right, you’ll probably end up awkwardly dancing back and forth before finally saying, “Sorry, you go first.” In Australia, remember to yield to the left. 4. Confuse Australians with New Zealanders It’s hard to tell them apart, but before long, you’ll notice subtle differences in how they pronounce certain words. Until then, it’s best to avoid these sibling rivalries. Just ask them straight up where they’re from, and you’ll gradually learn to distinguish their accents. 5. Get freaked out by finding a spider in your shoe Or seeing a snake sunbathing next to your bag by the riverbank, sharks lurking where you just surfed, or a huge koala suddenly jumping down from a tree. To avoid letting out a girlish scream and feeling embarrassed when encountering these seemingly silly wild animals, the only solution is to adopt the Australian mindset of “no worries.” 6. Drive on the right It’s late at night, and you’ve completely forgotten that you’re in the Australian outback, where people drive on the left — meaning you stay to the right of other cars. Even if your story doesn’t end in a major car accident, it’s still enough to become a laughingstock among your Australian friends. 7. Eat dinner before afternoon tea Have you ever been invited for afternoon tea around 6 p.m.? Show your eager anticipation for a nice cup of Earl Grey, and you’re sure to become the talk of the evening. Because in the land of eternal sunshine, afternoon tea signals that it’s time for dinner. 8. Take a big spoonful of Vegemite Watching someone who’s never tried Vegemite shovel a huge spoonful straight into their mouth is the funniest thing ever. Locals love egging you on to do it and then laughing. Remember, the Aussie way is to spread a little Vegemite on buttered toast. 9. Get sunburned quickly It’s easy to spot tourists — just look for people with bright red, sunburned skin. Locals know to slather on thick sunscreen before heading out. 10. Underestimate the ocean Be very careful when swimming at the beach. Otherwise, when the lifeguard drags you ashore and you’re gasping for air and about to cry, you’ll see plenty of smirking locals shaking their heads, thinking, “Told you not to swim there!” 11. Misinterpret Australian lingo If they’re putting shrimp on the barbie, don’t ask why; if your friend asks you to grab him a pair of “thongs,” don’t pull out your underwear. Also, don’t stop talking until someone responds. 12. Look left when crossing the street Doing this not only immediately marks you as a tourist but can also be life-threatening. When in doubt, look both ways at least six times before crossing the street. 13. Underestimate the size of the country Feel free to share your plan to tour Sydney in one day and then pop over to Melbourne for a quick visit. But in Australia, nothing is close — even the major cities are hours apart by flight. 14. Trust a koala Come on, man! This joke has been around for so long—don’t you know this guy doesn’t actually exist?! |
