Tokyo’s Avant-Garde Architectural New Landmark: The World’s Only Wooden Skyscraper

As technology and construction methods advance rapidly, building towering skyscrapers is no longer a novelty. A wooden skyscraper constructed 90% from timber has emerged as the most talked-about new trend for the future. In Tokyo, a city that blends tradition with urban life, a developer plans to construct the world’s tallest vertical forest building, “W350,” by 2041.

Japanese developer Sumitomo Forestry plans to build a 350-meter, 70-story wooden skyscraper in central Tokyo on its 350th anniversary in 2041, aiming to create the world’s tallest wooden skyscraper. Dubbed “W350,” the project will integrate shops, a hotel, residences, and offices across 8,000 rooms, covering an area of 455,000 square meters, making it one of the world’s most daring architectural designs.

This wooden skyscraper will set a new benchmark for future architecture, replacing conventional materials like steel and concrete. It will use only 10% steel, with the remaining 90% made of timber. Key structural elements such as internal columns and beams will combine steel and wood, offering effective earthquake resistance, while the interior spaces will be entirely wooden.

This concrete-alternative architectural plan is expected to reduce carbon emissions by over 75%, promoting more sustainable urban development. If completed as planned, it will become another architectural marvel for Japan.
